Maher Claims His Trump-Orangutan Jokes Are Different From Roseanne’s Ape Tweets

HBO “Real Time” host Bill Maher did a monologue that covered Roseanne Barr, Samantha Bee and of course, President Trump and his family. It was just as vile as you had imagined and not in the least funny… except to Maher himself.

Maher defended himself and hid behind what he thinks is humor while likening President Trump to an orangutan and then comparing that to Roseanne Barr’s Twitter post about a former adviser to President Barack Obama.

After Barr tweeted that former Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, who is African-American, is the lovechild of the Muslim Brotherhood and the “Planet of the Apes,” she was immediately fired by ABC. Even after Roseanne apologized profusely and begged ABC to save the show. Then critics on the right started calling for HBO to fire Maher, just as ABC fired Barr despite this year’s success of her rebooted “Roseanne” comedy series.

During Maher’s opening monologue, he said that he had to do another segment of “Explaining Jokes to Idiots” and pointed out that there were four “key facts” that made his ape jokes different than Barr’s tweet. “One, Trump is an orangutan,” Maher said. “Two, white people have not been subjected to a racist trope comparing them to apes for hundreds of years.” Maher’s third explanation was that his joke was in response to Trump’s 2013 accusations that President Obama was not born in America and called for the release of the president’s birth certificate. Maher offered Trump $5 million to provide his own birth certificate, which he did. Maher wouldn’t pay up and Trump sued him for it. I have no idea if he won or not. “And four, I’ve already been fired by ABC,” Maher said, referring to his “Politically Incorrect” program, which aired from 1993 to 2002.

Many out there on social media contend that the comedian has been able to keep his HBO show on the air because he is a liberal, while Roseanne, “a free-thinking Trump supporter,” was fired. “Wait, Bill Maher makes comparisons to Trump being a gorilla all the time,” tweeted conservative activist Charlie Kirk, director of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit that says it tries to educate students on “true free-market values.” Maher’s comments “get classified as ‘jokes’ by the media and he is of course allowed to keep his show and not have his life ruined,” Kirk said. That’s a fair point. There is definitely a double standard at play here.

He had other abhorrent jokes in the monologue such as comparing Trump to the lava flows in Hawaii, “This guy could tweet about the Hawaii Volcano and he’d make it about him,” Maher joked. “‘I’m orange and gassy! Where’s my headline?” Not funny in the least. Then of course there were the requisite Ivanka/incest jokes. He’s obsessed with Ivanka and it’s just sick.

The HBO personality is himself very familiar with getting into trouble for inappropriate comments. ABC canceled Maher’s “Politically Incorrect” in 2002 following comments he made about the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. The comedian argued that “the labeling of terrorists as cowards was hypocritical, and that we [the U.S.] have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away,” Bustle reported. In an incident last year, Maher apologized after he was criticized for calling himself a “house n—-r” on his HBO show. The network later removed his comment from future airings of the episode, calling it “inexcusable.”

Maher calls Roseanne a longtime friend, but then goes on to joke about her supposed mental illness. “Now, my friend Roseanne had admitted that she had been admitted to a mental institution,” Maher added. “She has said she has multiple personalities and unfortunately, one of them is quite a racist.” While acknowledging that Barr will “always be [his] friend,” Maher criticized the tweets that prompted ABC to cancel Barr’s show. “So full of racism, conspiracy theories and personal attacks,” Maher said of the tweets. “Abhorrent, bordering on presidential.”

Maher said it’s “not a mystery” how a “person with mental illness” like Roseanne could be taken in “by a party that has lost its mind.” He also invoked former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, who he said took the high road by calling the ordeal a “teachable moment.” “What a day for Trump supporters,” Maher reacted. “First they lose their favorite show… and they get threatened with learning!”

And while Maher accused the President of being stupid and a liar for the millionth time, he also called him a “whiny little b**ch.” Well, here is some vintage whinage from Bill himself via Breitbart: “Maher said, “Trump has shown that the American people — they elected him. … And his popularity rating keeps going up, not down. It’s almost in the range of a normal president, which is really scary. Because he certainly is not that. So, they obviously don’t care about so many things they used to care about like decorum, or policy, or democracy, or freedom of the press.””

Joke for joke, it doesn’t get any viler than Bill Maher. I don’t call for him to be fired, because I just choose not to watch him. Perhaps Roseanne should be given the same consideration.
