Obama’s Education Secretary: Boycott Schools Until America’s Gun Laws Change

Two Obama-era education secretaries just suggested that parents pull their children out of schools in the public school system “until we have better gun laws.” This came in response to the Santa Fe High School shooting in Texas that left eight students and two teachers dead at the hands of a 11th grade student. Ten others were injured.

Former Assistant Education Secretary Peter Cunningham initially suggested the idea on Twitter and then former Education Secretary Arne Duncan later shared it on his own feed, proclaiming it brilliant. No, it’s not. Not even close. Arne Duncan tweeted that it’s “tragically necessary” to pull kids out of schools in order to keep them safe from potential gun violence.

Bill Bennett, the education secretary under President Ronald Reagan, said on “Fox & Friends” that Duncan is saying schools can’t be kept safe. “We can keep our schools safe,” he said. “They have metal detectors. There are other things you can do.” He stressed communication between adults and students. “Students need to know … if you see something, say something,” he said. “These kids tend to know where the problems are.” Bennett adamantly stated that keeping students out of school is not a good idea. “Laying down your brains because of this doesn’t make any sense.”

There are numerous excellent reasons for pulling your kids out of the public school system, but enforced gun control using students as pawns is not one of them. Good reasons include concerns over left-wing indoctrination into Islam, socialism and fake science, as well as concerns over a lack of armed security. Not to mention a whole lack of actual teaching and learning.

One wonders what sort of “better gun laws” would have prevented this last tragedy. In the end, the left doesn’t mean ‘laws’, they mean gun confiscation and the elimination of Second Amendment rights. The killer in this last shooting used his dad’s .38 revolver and a shotgun to kill with. They weren’t so-called “assault weapons.” He also had pipe bombs, pressure cooker bombs, Molotov cocktails and knives that he planned to use. One way or another, this kid was going to murder someone and guns were simply convenient. The father purchased the guns legally. This kid had never bought a gun before, so neither universal background checks, nor waiting periods would have stopped the shooter either.

Cunningham and Duncan don’t have a clue as to what they are talking about. One commenter said, “Who will watch the children of parents who cannot afford to miss work? Who will make up the lost class time? What kind of a privileged hot take is this?” Indeed. I believe that the public school system should be scrapped and we should go to waivers, etc. and put kids in decent learning environments. I’m a big supporter of homeschooling and did so with my own children. But to pull elitist crap here like this that has no realistic take on what parents have to do to work and raise a family is just jaw dropping.

It’s beyond ironic that the Obama administration spent eight years hammering parents who either homeschooled their children or sent their kids to private charter schools. Now this. For instance, in 2013, the Obama administration tried to ship an asylum-seeking family from Germany back home after it was learned that the parents preferred homeschooling their children. Two years later during a speech, Obama criticized parents who send their children to private schools (even thought that is what he did with his).

Now, the idea of homeschooling kids or sending them to private or charter schools fits the left’s agenda. So, of course, political opportunists like Cunningham and Duncan are ready to embrace it. What hypocrites. This shows how irresponsible and dishonest those on the left are and this is who Obama tapped to lead our children during his administration. Just unbelievable. The radicals want to use our kids as human shields to impose gun control.

“It’s wildly impractical and difficult,” Duncan said. “But I think it’s wildly impractical and difficult that kids are shot when they are sent to school.” Duncan is the managing partner of Chicago Cred, an organization that works to curb gun violence in Chicago. Note: they are doing a terrible job at it.

A school boycott, Duncan said, is just one suggestion and he’d consider other creative ideas that could impel policy changes. “I’m open to other ideas, I’m open to different ideas, but I’m not open to doing nothing,” Duncan said. “We will see whether this gains traction, or something does, but we have to think radically.” Oh, he’s doing that alright and more. The boycott proposition received momentum online, including support from parents and the founder of Teacher for America.
