NutriBullet Lawsuits: Scary Test Video Released, More Victims File Suits

For those not familiar with it, NutriBullet is a nutrient extractor/juicer/high speed blender. In November 2017, separate lawsuits were filed by 22 customers. They experienced injuries while using the product.

The injuries range from burns from exploding blenders to damage from the blades themselves. Some of them are severe. NutriBullet is not a newcomer to accusations against their product. As is so often the case, they claimed that the customers were not using the product correctly. But most customers who have been on the receiving end of injuries from the blender claim otherwise.

The first case that was publicized by TMZ was Wendy Littlefield. The blender not only chopped her tomatoes, but her hand as well. She used it to blend canned tomatoes and beans. The NutriBullet 900 series exploded and the blades spun into her hand. This resulted in Wendy having to get multiple surgeries. They were not successful. She lost the feeling and use of two fingers due to the mishap. Along with two other consumers, Wendy filed suit with Abir, Cohen, Treyzon & Salo, LLP.

Brendan Cosso, who is a longtime user of NutriBullet, had his explode after only 20 seconds of blending his breakfast drink. “This thing just chopped my hand to pieces pretty much. I was making it, went to grab it, the container exploded off and my hand went right into the blades.” He received stitches, but still has no feeling in his finger.

Another case involves Sheryl Utal. Her encounter with NutriBullet left her with second degree buns on her arms and chest. “I had my hands on it, like your normally do as you put it in and turn it to lock it in place, and it was on for maybe 15 to 20 seconds and it exploded. It spins so fast that it heats up the contents, the contents get under pressure, and the device explodes, so that hot liquid exploded onto me and created nasty burns.” Her lawsuit specifically claims that the assembly blade detached and the scalding contents were sprayed on her.

22 lawsuits were filed last November against the company. The photos of Cosso’s injuries are graphic and disturbing. These people could be awarded millions in damages if the suits prevail. As stated before, as you would expect, NutriBullet has long claimed that those injured by their product are not using it correctly, stating that hot liquid cannot go into the blender. A spokesperson even stated that it’s impossible for these incidents to occur if the blender was used as intended. But many customers have received severe burns and they claim they used room temperature ingredients. Which makes sense when you think about it at all.

Even more victims are now coming forward with lawsuits. Fabiana Nishioka, for instance, had hers explode while she was making hummus. Blending room temperature chickpeas, garlic and lime, her NutriBullet Pro 900 exploded. She had no idea that the ingredients were heating up until she was burned on her neck, face and chest after the base assembly exploded from the canister. Her particular injuries were so severe, she probably will suffer permanent disfigurement to her neck.

At the center of many of the claims are consumers being injured by hot liquids exploding. Even though the company denies it is possible, there are just too many instances for it not to be an issue. This manufacturing defect, which clearly is responsible for causing injury during normal operation, needs to be addressed. A video was turned over during a lawsuit that showed the device exploding under different circumstances. Attorneys for NutriBullet requested the video be quashed and were denied their request.

The following is a statement from the company to the media last November:

“Every day, millions of NutriBullet customers blend nutritious smoothies from fruits, vegetables and nuts in NutriBullets. NutriBullets are safe and present no issue if used as directed and operated only as long as necessary to prepare a smoothie, which is generally less than one minute.

NutriBullet is dedicated to the safety of its customers, and investigates allegations of injuries involving its products. Unlike the plaintiffs’ attorneys in these cases, however, NutriBullet is bound by the laws of physics.

As plaintiffs’ attorneys are well aware, numerous tests, including those already performed by their own experts, establish that NutriBullets cannot “hyper-heat” room temperature ingredients and rupture in a short period of time. In fact, experts for the plaintiffs’ lawyers have testified under oath that a separation of the NutriBullet blade and cup assemblies due to a build-up of heat and pressure could only occur after 10-20 minutes of continuous use.”

If you have experienced an injury due to the malfunction of one of these units, you should contact the Schmidt Firm, PLLC. They are currently accepting NutriBullet induced injury cases in all 50 states. The firm is not filing a class action lawsuit, but instead individual lawsuits for people who were injured. Reparations and compensation is more significant this way. Do not wait to take action if you feel you are a victim here as time is not your friend in a lawsuit. The Schmidt Firm, PLLC will provide you a free evaluation.
