Meghan McCain and Whoopi Goldberg discussed on The View whether President Trump could fire Mueller and if riots would ensue because of the move. This is a topic after the FBI raided the offices, home and hotel room of President Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen.
Since the raid, President Trump’s war of words against the Mueller investigation and his “witch hunt” have ratcheted up in intensity. Many speculated on whether the President would fire Mueller. Even Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that they believed President Trump has the authority to fire Mueller.
President Trump says the rumors of his firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller are unfounded and not true. As the current regulations stand, any dismissal for cause would have to be carried out by Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein. Regardless, four senators have proposed a measure to “protect” Mueller. One of those senators is Lindsey Graham (R).
The women of The View discussed possible scenarios where President Trump would fire Mueller. It was a discussion that got Whoopi quite animated. Whoopi was excited at the prospect of rioting in Washington, DC. Co-host Meghan McCain, the only semi-conservative voice in the group, warned that they were getting ahead of themselves. McCain said, “We are sitting around pontificating about something that hasn’t happened, that’s going on a lot of unnamed sources so I don’t think we should get too far ahead of our skis. I do think everything you’re saying about what would happen if he does fires Mueller, I have said, Lindsey Graham has said it’s political suicide. I one hundred percent think there would be — I think there would actually be rioting in Washington, D.C. I think it would be at levels we haven’t seen.”
That’s when Whoopi smiled and got candid. “Now that would be fun to watch, I have to say,” said Goldberg.
McCain went on in answer to Whoopi: “Yeah, I mean — I think it would take levels that we can’t comprehend since the Nixon era, and I don’t think we should get too far ahead because it hasn’t happened.” Meghan brought up Graham because he is attempting to take steps to protect Mueller’s job. “Legislation offered on Wednesday by Republicans Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Democrats Chris Coons of Delaware and Cory Booker of New Jersey would give any special counsel a 10-day window to seek expedited judicial review of a firing. The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to consider the legislation in the coming weeks.”
The concern over Trump firing Mueller swirls around statements in tweets that the President has recently made concerning the Russia probe and the raiding of Cohen’s office, home and hotel room. That raid was triggered by Mueller finding something in his investigation he considered to be illegal and then turning it over to the US Attorney in Manhattan and the FBI. Sanders made it clear that President Trump has a wide range of options on Mueller and that they feel the President is within his purview to fire him. This is unsettled law and would surely be challenged if attempted.
Also during The View, Meghan McCain got incensed over the women tearing into Paul Ryan. McCain said, “Cheering kind of surprises me a little bit because Paul Ryan is a politician of an era gone by. He was one of the most powerful congressmen between 2009 and 2016, before Trumpism sort of completely took over. He is a really classic conservative, and this party is the party of Trump now. People like me who are old-school conservatives, we’re really on our way out. and it makes me really sad.”
McCain continued: “My husband, I was texting him about it, and he said, ‘He committed the worst sin — he was serious, polite and nice. That’s not what people want right now.’ He just gave a press conference saying he wants to spend more time with his family. I believe him to a point. I also believe he doesn’t want to deal with this anymore, and he doesn’t want to go home to his constituents in Wisconsin and try and explain some of the tweeting and the more incendiary things that President Trump is doing right now.”
She went on: “We’re having Trey Gowdy on tomorrow — this is the bloodletting of classic conservative. The people that are cheering. Do you know what comes in its place? Trumpism, and I assume if you don’t like Paul Ryan, you probably hate Trump more. So maybe don’t cheer when people like Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney and Trey Gowdy, and people like Ben Sasse, who are, thank God, still in office, or maybe on their way out, because I assure you — what’s in its place you will like a lot less.”
Co-host Joy Behar said, “Paul Ryan has been an enabler of Trump.” McCain shot back, “That is factually inaccurate. No. He has gone up against Trump. It’s part of the reason why he is stepping down right now. That’s factually inaccurate — he has gone up against Trump time and time again. He has been crucified by hardcore conservative media as a result of it.” Behar sneered, “He got his tax cut through. He got Neil Gorsuch. He got everything he wanted.” McCain said, “What do you want if Paul Ryan isn’t good enough?” Behar shot back, “I want them all out.”
That’s when McCain lost it and shouted, “But that’s not logical. We shouldn’t want that. We live in a democracy, we should want two healthy parties. They are against each other, but if Paul Ryan is the greatest sin, this is how we got Trump because if Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney and people like this are the worst kind of politicians, then you deserve Trump. He was a truly decent man who was trying to fight for democracy and conservative ideals. Now, what is going to be left I have no idea.”
