Los Angeles has come up with another way to fight climate change. They are painting their streets white and it costs a cool $40,000 per mile. The treatment can last up to seven years.
City officials have ordered this done based on research in California. In the race to combat imagined climate change, the city of Los Angeles is employing a surprising new tactic — covering its streets in a grayish-white coating known as CoolSeal. It’s sprayed onto the roadway with trucks, then spread across the surface with squeegees. However, its impact supposedly extends far beyond the edge of the pavement.

Los Angeles has thousands of miles of asphalt. Dark-colored asphalt absorbs between 80 and 95 percent of the sun’s rays, heating up not just the streets themselves, but the entire surrounding area. So when temperatures in Southern California rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, surface temperatures on its asphalt roads can climb to 150. This worsens a phenomenon called “urban heat island effect.” The EPA claims it can add up to 22 degrees Fahrenheit to the average air temperature in a city, compared to the surrounding area.
Of course, this approach is posited on the work of researchers in California who ran calculation in 2008 that came up with the conclusion that by having white roofs and streets, the Los Angeles area could reduce its heat footprint. However, that is highly contested and these researchers’ facts are highly questionable since they push “green justice” at every opportunity.
Last week, researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley presented their study at California’s annual Climate Change Research Conference in Sacramento.
If the 100 largest cities in the world replaced their dark roofs with white shingles and their asphalt-based roads with concrete or other light-colored material, it could offset 44 metric gigatons (billion tons) of greenhouse gases, the study shows. That amounts to more greenhouse gas than the entire human population emits in one year, according to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times. The strategy could also offset the growth in carbon dioxide emissions, which account for about 75% of greenhouse gases, for the next 10 years.
… In 2009, the state will require that new and retrofitted residential and commercial, with both flat and sloped roofs, be installed with heat-reflective roofing. The requirements are part of California´s energy-efficient building code.
Globally, roofs account for about 25% of the surface of most cities, and pavement accounts for about 35%. Even without cutting industrial pollution from current levels, installing white roofs and pavements could offset more than 10 years of emissions growth, according to the conference data.
If you review the data since 2009 when the ‘white roof mandate’ was put in place, you’ll realize most of this is nonsense. Now we move onto painting the streets white. At $40,000 per mile and with Los Angeles having 6,500 miles of streets, that comes to $260 million in their quest to stop global warming. Plus, it’s an ongoing expense as the streets would have to be repainted frequently.
Millions will continue to be spent on ‘white’ streets and rooftops instead of handling the homeless problem that spreads disease and crime. That costs a lot more than imagined climate change. Arizona State University is throwing shade on the whole premise and they are asserting that “a change in surface temperature has only limited effects on the overlying air layers such that overall benefits of reflective pavements and roofs can be less than expected.” And then there are those pesky greenhouse gases in the completion of this project.
Not to mention white surface glare. If you drive on these streets, you’ll know what I mean. With bright sunshine, it can blind you and if it is foggy, it is a nightmare. Winter or summer, hours of bright sunlight can burn the surface of the eye, causing a temporary, but painful condition known as photokeratitis. Over time, unprotected exposure can contribute to cataracts, as well as cancer of the eyelids and the skin around the eyes. UV exposure also may increase the risk of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over age 65. While cataracts can be removed surgically, there is no way to reverse damage to the macula, the area in the center of the retina. More unintended consequences for fake science.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement the city has a goal to complete the pricey project over a 20-year period. He’s also said to be a potential candidate for the presidency in 2020. He has used the project as part of an overall plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city by 45 percent below 1990 levels by 2025. Good luck with that. Los Angeles, like the rest of the Golden State, is bankrupt and yet they keep spending money on projects like this.
In San Francisco, the streets are paved in human defecation. In Los Angeles, it’s white paint. Welcome to California.
