NYFD Battles Fire On The 50th Floor Of Trump Tower, 1 Dead… 6 Injured

A fire broke out at Trump Tower in Manhattan that left one resident dead and six firefighters injured. Todd Brassner, 67, who was in apartment 50C on the 50th floor of Trump Tower, in Manhattan, died in the hospital after the unit was engulfed by the blaze.

Brassner was an art dealer and an old friend of Andy Warhol’s. He came from old money. He bought the apartment in 1996. He’s mentioned multiple times in Warhol’s autobiography.

Social media quickly filled with photos and video of the fire and pedestrians scrambling to find shelter from falling debris. The left and the media immediately began blaming President Trump for the tragedy even though he had nothing to do with it and was not in residence at the time. They were literally celebrating this on Twitter.

“When I saw the television, I thought we were finished,” Lalitha Masson, a 76 year-old Trump Tower resident with Parkinson’s disease, told The New York Times afterward. “I called my oldest son and said goodbye to him because the way it looked everything was falling out of the window, and it reminded me of 9/11.”

Brassner filed for bankruptcy in 2015. His apartment was up for sale for $2.5 million. It was totally engulfed in the fire, but was contained. “The limited support of his family coupled with his medical problems caused the debtor to fall into arrears on his mortgage, credit card payments and line of credit payments,” says the filing.

Brassner was pulled unconscious from his apartment in the Midtown skyscraper and rushed to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital. He was initially listed in critical condition, but pronounced dead later in the evening, according to the NYPD. The four-alarm blaze also injured six firefighters… two with burns. Flames and thick black smoke were seen coming from the windows of the unit and debris fell to the ground below. 200 firefighters and members of the emergency services rushed to the scene on Fifth Avenue while the New York Police Department closed surrounding streets.

The fire broke out around 5:30 pm EST. Trump Tower has 58 stories and President Trump has the top three floors. The residential units have no sprinklers. There was a lot of smoke in the building, but no one was evacuated. Some residents left on their own. 45 minutes after the fire broke out, Brassner’s death was announced. By 7:45 pm, the fire was put out. Trump took to Twitter to praise firefighters for their response, saying they had extinguished the blaze.

By all accounts, the building is very well-built and President Trump attributed the construction to the fire’s limited spread. Firefighters agreed with him. “Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” Trump wrote on Twitter. Asked if that assessment was accurate, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said, “It’s a well-built building. The upper floors, the residence floors, are not sprinklered.”

The cause of the blaze is still not known. Firefighters were sweeping adjacent apartments and stairwells to determine the source of the blaze in one of the skyscraper’s residential apartments, according to fire officials.

None of the Trump family was in the building at the time of the blaze. As well as Trump’s luxury residence, Trump Tower also contains offices of the Trump family business. His son, Eric Trump, tweeted: “Thank you to the amazing men and women of the NYFD who extinguished a fire in a residential apartment at @TrumpTower. The @FDNY and @NYPD are truly some of the most incredible people anywhere!” The building opened in 1983 and at that time, sprinklers were not required in the building codes. Subsequent updates to the building code required commercial skyscrapers to install the sprinklers retroactively, but owners of older residential highrises are not required to install sprinklers unless the building undergoes major renovations.

The fire on Saturday was the second at Trump Tower this year. A fire broke out in a rooftop heating and cooling unit at the skyscraper on Jan. 8, sending black smoke billowing over the skyline. One firefighter and two building employees suffered minor injuries in that fire.
