Elizabeth Warren was questioned on multiple media outlets about her intentions to run for the presidency in 2020 and about taking a DNA test to prove her Native American heritage. Warren wanted to talk about proposed changes to the banking laws, but was forced to defend her disputed claim to be Native American and how it would impact a possible run for president.
She was noticeably shaken and angry whenever she was pressed on these issues. Warren carefully worded her response to running for the presidency in 2020. Many outlets took it as a denial, but she does not rule out the possibility. She merely deflects on it. She says “I am not running for president” or that she has “no intention” of running for president. That’s true in the present tense.
When Chuck Todd pressed Warren on the issue, she would not commit to serving out her full 6 year Senate term if re-elected next November. She is a master at careful wording and the political two-step. She learned from the best… Bill Clinton. She studies her script in advance, leaves herself outs through careful selection of tenses and simply repeats her lines robotically when pressed. Her answer is always the same, no matter how the question is thrown at her.
Then there is the evasiveness on her DNA test. All available evidence says she has no Native America blood in her and a simple DNA test would settle the question. However, Elizabeth Warren adamantly refuses to do so. And perhaps as Legal Insurrection pointed out, a simple DNA test reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of Warren’s claim to be Native American for employment purposes. Under clear EEOC and Harvard standards, Native American ancestry would not be sufficient to claim Native American status for employment purposes, which is what Warren did. When asked about taking a DNA test by Chuck Todd, Warren said, “Look, I do know. I know who I am and never used it for anything. Never got any benefit from it anywhere.”
As pointed out, once again, Warren has not directly refused to take the DNA test. She has evaded it. No one has asked her if she has already taken a DNA test. All you have to do is listen to Warren in one of her many interviews to confirm this fact.
JOHN ROBERTS, FOX NEWS: Well, I know that you’re looking ahead to November as opposed to 2020, but indulge me a moment here if you would. There are many people who are saying should you choose to run in 2020, and one of these groups is the Berkshire Eagle, Massachusetts newspaper that endorsed you in 2012, that the issue of your ancestry will come up and they’re suggesting that you put it to rest saying, quote: Elizabeth Warren should screw up her courage and take the spit test, a DNA test, a positive test would permanently resolve the issue while possibly shutting down President Trump.
Would you be willing to take a DNA test to put this issue to rest?
SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: Look, let’s start again, where you started. I’m not running for president. But let me tell you a little bit about my family.
You know, my mom and dad were born and raised out in Oklahoma, and my daddy was in his teens when he fell in love with my mother. She was a beautiful girl who played the piano. And he was head over heels in love with her and wanted to marry her. And his family was bitterly opposed to that because she was part Native American.
And eventually my parents eloped and they survived the Great Depression, they survived the Dust Bowl. They went through a lot of hard times. They raised three boys, my older brothers all of whom went off to the military. They raised me.
They knocked around and it was tough but they hung together. They hung together for 63 years. I know who I am because of what my mother and my father told me, what my grandmother and my grandfather told me, what all my aunts and uncles told me and my brothers.
It’s a part of who I am and no one’s ever going to take that away.
Warren, who says her heritage includes Cherokee and Delaware Indian roots, said Native Americans are “a group that is being injured every single day.” “We need to bring some attention to it and we need to put some resources on it,” she added.
Her answer to the DNA question is the same time after time, no matter what media outlet she appears on. The fact that Warren claims her mother was Native American has been substantially debunked. Cherokee genealogist Twila Barnes uncovered the wedding announcement for Warren’s parents in the local newspaper and it reflected family joy and community celebration, completely inconsistent with Warren’s family lore. “The problem with Warren’s story is that none of the evidence supports it,” said Barnes in a 2016 post on her Thoughts from Polly’s Granddaughter blog. “Her genealogy shows no indication of Cherokee ancestry. Her parents’ wedding doesn’t resemble an elopement. And additional evidence doesn’t show any indication of her Herring grandparents being Indian haters.”
An editorial this month in Massachusetts’s Berkshire Eagle urged Warren to buy a DNA test for $99 to resolve the issue once and for all. “All the senator needs to do is spit into a tube, wait a few weeks and get her answer,” the paper said.
Warren is being queried on her DNA because of attacks on her by President Trump, who has branded her “Pocahontas.” Trump did it again in Pennsylvania. Despite Warren calling Trump racist because of this, it has continued because he fully expects her to run in 2020 and because it is effective. Because she cannot or won’t prove her Native American heritage, that brand will stick. Recently, Warren tried to embrace Pocahontas and to become a champion of the Native Americans she ignored her entire life. It is backfiring spectacularly. Again as Legal Insurrection pointed out, Warren’s weekend interviews reflect that she’s cracking under the pressure of Trump’s taunts. It’s not a pretty picture. It is a study in political floundering and failure in the media.
