Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, claims that The View co-host Joy Behar apologized to Vice President Mike Pence for mocking his Christian faith on television. This comes after a massive petition campaign by MRC TV that complained about the segment that was so offensive to millions of Christians. The View is broadcast on ABC, which Disney owns.
During a February broadcast, Joy Behar questioned Mike Pence’s mental stability because he reportedly said that God speaks to him. This came up after the show’s co-hosts cued video footage of former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman’s comments on “Celebrity Big Brother,” in which the former staffer discussed the Trump administration. Omarosa said in the clip, “As bad as you think Trump is, you would be worried about Pence. … Everyone that is wishing for impeachment might want to reconsider their life. I am Christian, I love Jesus, but [Pence] thinks Jesus tells him to say things,” she added in the clip.
MRC Action members made nearly 40,000 calls to ABC to protest the anti-Christian bigotry broadcast on The View. Additionally, Action members have taken the extra step to contact The View’s sponsors almost 13,000 times to let them know that this anti-Christian bias is offensive, unacceptable and should not be sponsored by conscientious companies.
MRC President Brent Bozell had this to say on the issue:
“It is a good first step that Joy Behar privately apologized to Vice President Pence, but it is not nearly enough. Behar and ABC need to publicly apologize for the bigoted slurs on ‘The View.’ The bigoted statements made about the Vice President’s Christian faith offended hundreds of millions of Christians across the country, the largest faith group in the United States. Their apology should, therefore, be as public as their insult. When they do that, this whole matter will be put to rest. Until they do, we will not let up our campaign to let the world — including their advertisers — know of their anti-Christian bigotry.”
After they played the video, The View’s panel discussed Omarosa’s analysis of Pence’s faith and how it translates into politics. That’s when Behar brought up Pence’s faith and mental illness. “It’s one thing to talk to Jesus,” Behar said. “It’s another thing when Jesus talks to you.” Some time after that, Behar added that hearing voices is symptomatic of “mental illness,” and quipped, “Can he talk to Mary Magdalene without his wife in the room?” “I don’t know that I want my vice president, um — speaking in tongues and having Jesus speak to him,” said Hostin as well.
Both Joy Behar’s and Sonny Hostin’s remarks were deeply offensive to millions of Christians in America. Mike Pence was also offended and told “Fox & Friends” that while those in the public spotlight are “accustomed to criticism,” he couldn’t bite his tongue over Behar’s comments. Nor should he. “When I heard that ABC had a program that likened my Christianity to mental illness, I just couldn’t be silent,” he said. “My Christian faith is probably the most important thing in my life,” he added. “I do try and start every day reading the Bible. My wife and I try and have a prayer together before I leave the house every morning. But I do think I’m a very typical American.”
“People of all different faiths and traditions have cherished their faith in God,” Pence continued, “and for ABC to have a forum that spoke in such demeaning terms, I think it’s evidence of how out of touch some in the mainstream media are with the faith and values of the American people.” Pence is deeply religious and the vicious attack against him and his faith was uncalled for. ABC and Disney got an earful after allowing the outrageous comments on the show. “To have ABC maintain a broadcast forum that compared Christianity to mental illness is just wrong,” Pence said. “It is simply wrong for ABC to have a television program that expresses that kind of religious intolerance.”
Iger, speaking to shareholders during a meeting, said that Behar phoned Pence personally and made amends for her disparaging comments. However, some conservatives are unhappy with the alleged apology since Behar did not acknowledge her apparent regret for the anti-Christian commentary to the public.
During the Q&A portion of the meeting, Justin Danhof, general counsel for the National Research for Public Policy Research, asked Iger about Behar’s remarks. “‘What do you say to the tens of millions of Christians, and President Trump supporters, that your networks have so blatantly offended and ascribed hateful labels?” Danhof asked. Iger responded that, “Joy Behar apologized to Vice President Pence directly.” Frankly, if I were Pence, I would not have taken the call. “She made a call to him and apologized, which I thought was absolutely appropriate,” Iger explained and noted that he also took “exception” to the talk show co-host’s comments. “I don’t think it was right,” he added. If true, he should be far more public about that and perhaps it’s time for Behar to exit stage left from The View.
