Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos Will Award $33 Million In Scholarships To 1,000 Illegal Immigrants

This really ticks me off and it shouldn’t. I have been a customer of Amazon’s for over 15 years. I love them. This won’t change that, but it sure makes me less fond of Jeff Bezos. The billionaire Amazon CEO has just announced that he will be donating $33 million to create college scholarships for 1,000 DREAMers. Those are illegal immigrants brought into America by their parents. First off, Bezos should know better. He is the son of a legal Cuban immigrant and this makes a mockery of all those who fought to come here the right and legal way. His father came to America when he was 16. Second off, actual Americans could use that scholarship money much more than people who are here breaking the rule of law.

Bezos also owns the Washington Post, which has turned into an uber liberal rag that conducts non-stop political hit jobs on President Trump. So, this is not all that surprising I guess. Just massively disappointing. Both Bezos and his wife MacKenzie Bezos will set up college scholarships for illegal immigrant DREAMers. He made the donation to TheDream.US, a nonprofit group founded by the former owner of the Washington Post, Don Graham. According to TheDream.US website, the group is “working to help over 4,000 highly motivated DREAMers graduate from college with career-ready degrees. DREAMers are immigrant youth who came to this country at a very young age without documentation.” Yes, and nothing is stopping them from starting the process to become citizens. But they choose not to and Bezos is rewarding that behavior.

The $33 million is expected to cover scholarships for approximately 1,000 illegal immigrants who are currently still in the country under the Obama-era DACA policy. Bezos is proud of his donation to TheDream.US, saying “MacKenzie and I are honored to be able to help today’s Dreamers by funding these scholarships.” Since DREAMers are here illegally, they are not eligible for government assistance for college, such as grants and loans. TheDream.US aims to offer these students up to $33,000 in financial aid spread over four years of college study. Right now, the group is funding approximately 2,840 illegal immigrants to go to school here in the US. Bezos has joined 100 CEO’s, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook, in signing an open letter to the government requesting an extension for DACA.

My son-in-law is from Denmark. He’s an engineer, highly skilled and educated and he speaks two languages. He married an American, my step-daughter, and they had children. He came here and we vouched for him and funded his stay etc. It took him five years or more, but he got his green card and then became a US citizen last year. We are very proud of him. But under Obama at one point, he had to leave because he wasn’t the right race or religion even though he was married to an American and had children here. So, I have a whole lack of sympathy here for DREAMers. Come here the right way or go home. It’s that simple… it’s called the rule of law. And being brought here by your parents is no excuse. It doesn’t stop you from working to become a citizen yourself.

“MacKenzie and I are honored to be able to help today’s Dreamers by funding these scholarships,” Bezos said in a statement. Bezos “thinks that helping you is a great way to help not only your future but the future of the United States,” Graham said of DREAMers on a conference call with reporters Friday.

This is Bezos sticking his toe in the water for philanthropy. He has donated to other causes in the past, but not to this extent. Bezos was honored for donating $2.5 million to support marriage equality in Washington State in 2012 through the Human Rights Campaign. But that’s about it. I guess he’s decided to help the downtrodden… just not the American downtrodden. In June of 2017, Bezos took to Twitter to request suggestions from users on philanthropic efforts he should take part in. “I’m thinking I want much of my philanthropic activity to be helping people in the here and now — short term — at the intersection of urgent need and lasting impact,” stated Bezos.

I guess in his wisdom, Bezos decided the DREAMers were a great place to start. It’s his money, he can do as he pleases, but his father most likely would be ashamed of him over this.
