Haley Slams Obama’s Iran Policy: ‘We Must Not Make That Mistake Again’

Nikki Haley started off the new year with a roar at the UN today. She informed them of exactly what the US’ place will be in the world this coming year. She didn’t dance around it either, she got right down to business… specifically Iran and North Korea. The protests in Iran electrified her speech to the UN and she made it very clear that we dare not make the same mistakes Barack Obama did. She noted that “dozens have already been killed,” before referring to the failed Green Revolution in the first year of the Obama presidency.

In 2009, during the Green Revolution, thousands of protesters in Iran took to the streets protesting the reelection of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. They begged the Obama State Department to help them, but we turned our back on them. Many were killed as the regime took that as a green light to clamp down on the protesters. The Revolution was ultimately put down viciously with many deaths and arrests. Obama sided with the mullahs of Iran for his bloody nuclear deal and never once looked back at the bodies he left in his wake.

Haley stated that the US is seeking emergency meetings with the Security Council in New York and the Human Rights Council in Geneva regarding Iran. Then she said, “This is the precise picture of a long oppressed people rising up against their dictators. The international community has a role to play on this. The freedoms that are enshrined in the United Nations charter are under attack in Iran,” she said. “If the Iranian dictatorships history is any guide, we can expect more outrageous abuses in the days to come. The UN must speak out.”

“We must not be silent,” United States Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley stated. “The people of Iran are crying out for freedom. All freedom loving people must stand with their cause. The international community made the mistake of failing to do that in 2009. We must not make that mistake again.” She’s so very right on that point. Trump has been very critical of Iran since he took office and he is watching the situation there very closely.

Over the past week, anti-government protesters have stormed the streets in dozens of cities across the country, demanding among other things their release from the iron grip of the ruling theocracy. In her remarks, Haley wasted no time criticizing the regime and siding with the protesters against their oppressors. Haley stated, “Nowhere is the urgency of peace, security, and freedom being more tested than in Iran,” noting that “citizens are taking to the streets to protest the oppression of their own government.”

Earlier Tuesday, Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein said the United States wants to encourage protesters in Iran to “continue to fight for what’s right and to open up Iran.” “Right now we’re going to have conversations with the Security Council and see what we need to do to have an emergency session,” Haley added on Iran. “One way or another, we will have a meeting on what is happening in Iran and their protests and their fight for freedom.”

Haley went on to laud the bravery of the Iranian people: “It takes great bravery for the Iranian people to use the power of their voice against the government, especially when their government has a long history of murdering its own people who dare to speak the truth. We applaud the tremendous courage of the Iranian people. The government of Iran is actively attempting to stop social media and other forms of communication that allow their citizens voices to be heard it. We want to help amplify the voices of the Iranian people.”

Nikki then declared that the protests are “virtually in every city in Iran” and that they are calling for the “freedoms that are enshrined in the United Nations charter.” Yes, they are also chanting, “Death to the dictator!” I support that as well. Iran has shut down social media to quell the protests. Over 20 people have died so far and it is expected that the regime will clamp down on the protesters and soon. This is the time we need to stand with these people and help them however we can. Iran belongs to the Iranians, not the mullahs.
