Report: NBC Made Payment To Chris Matthews Accuser Over Sexual Harassment Claims

The Daily Caller unearthed a sexual harassment claim against MSNBC’s Chris Matthews yesterday. It was filed in 1999 and sources say that MSNBC paid $40,000 to make it go away. MSNBC says it was a separation-related payment to one of Chris Matthews’ employees after the woman complained about sexual harassment. This comes from two different sources that The Daily Caller spoke with concerning Matthews. It was an assistant producer on his show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews.” It should be noted that MSNBC is contesting the claim and is saying that the pay out was significantly lower and it was part of a severance package given to the employee. That sounds way less than credible to me. Matthews will now be put under a microscope and it would not surprise me in the least if he falls over this.

The woman in question complained to CNBC executives about Matthews making inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company of others at the network. MSNBC claims that at the time they thoroughly reviewed the claims and that Matthews received a formal reprimand. Sure he did. After their claimed investigation, MSNBC concluded that the comments were inappropriate and juvenile, but were not intended to be taken as propositions. Really? Does that sound right to you? That sounds to me as if he did exactly what she accused him of and she was terminated for it. This may have happened 18 years ago, but I highly doubt it was the only incident. I also doubt MSNBC’s spin on all this.

The woman in question supposedly received separation-related compensation when she left MSNBC. She has since gone on to work in a number of high-profile media positions. I’d really like to know who this is and hear what she has to say about all of this. Of course, we won’t as I’m sure she is bound by a non-disclosure agreement and she would be blackballed in the industry if she spoke up. MSNBC is not commenting on whether the employee left because of Matthews or whether this was the only claim in Matthews’ history at the company. I think that is telling all by itself. I’m fairly positive it is not.

Matthews, 71, has been the host of “Hardball” since 1997 and also hosted “The Chris Matthews Show” from 2002 to 2013. This is the guy that got a tingle up his leg when Obama was elected. The guy is not stable and often goes off the deep end of things. I guess not even a powerful ideologue like Matthews is immune to the sex trials sweeping the nation. He is just the latest high profile media personality to be accused of sexual misconduct. Matthews has raised eyebrows before, notably during the 2016 campaign when he was caught on a hot mic checking out First Lady Melania Trump. “Did you see her walk? Runway walk. My God is that good,” Matthews said in May 2016. “I could watch that runway show,” he added. Leering on air. Classy.

Matthews has railed endlessly against Trump for making what he claims are sexist and demeaning comments about women. He is married to Kathleen Matthews, the chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. Before joining MSNBC, he worked as a Capitol Police officer and later segued into politics. His jobs working for Democrats included being a speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter and chief of staff to House Speaker Tip O’Neill, D-MA.

This follows the termination and erasure of Matt Lauer at NBC News. He was the longtime host of “The Today Show.” He was let go after an employee complained about his inappropriate behavior. Then a tsunami of complaints, allegations and accusations were leveled at Lauer. His career and personal life were destroyed and in his case, rightly so. MSNBC also cut ties with “Morning Joe” analyst and “Game Change” author Mark Halperin in October after a dozen women accused the veteran political journalist of groping and other forms of sexual assault and harassment.

Matthews did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment early Sunday. NBC News on Dec. 8 announced it would require harassment-prevention training for all its employees and would conduct a “culture assessment” of the news division. That’s all just window dressing and this is far from done.
