Attempted Terror in Times Square: NYC Suicide Bomber Tied To ISIS

Published

on

This morning at approximately 7:19 am EST, the Port Authority Bus Terminal subway station in New York City was rocked by an explosion. The suicide bomber was inspired by ISIS. The terror group had threatened to attack Times Square and European Christmas markets via encrypted messaging apps sent 2 weeks ago. The Jihadist seriously wounded himself and injured three others. The terrorist’s name is Akayed Ullah and he is a 27 year-old Brooklyn resident. He had wires attached to him with Velcro and zip ties and a 5-inch metal pipe bomb and battery pack strapped to his midsection as he walked through the Manhattan transit hub during rush-hour.

The bomber partially detonated the device, or things could have been much worse. He was carrying it under the right side of his jacket. It exploded prematurely inside the passageway to the A, C and E trains at Eight Avenue and West 42nd Street. Police took the suspect into custody and units were sent to search his home. Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that the man was inspired by ISIS and possibly born in Bangladesh. He has lived in the US for seven years and “was supposedly setting the device off in the name of ISIS.” “So, definitely a terrorist attack, definitely intended,” Bratton said.

The terrorist of course suffered the most serious injuries. Ullah suffered burns and wounds to his abdomen and hands and appeared to be the only person seriously injured in the pipe bomb explosion, authorities said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Three other people sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One person was taken to St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital, another to Mount Sinai and another person was treated at the scene, officials said.

Police spoke to the bomber briefly. He told them that he made the explosive device at the electrical company where he works. He had no direct contact with ISIS. This is just the beginning and investigators will speak to everyone connected to this guy to determine if there are other bombers or further threats to be dealt with.

Emergency personnel flooded the scene following the incident. When the bomb went off, commuters stampeded out of the terminal. It sent them into a frenzy. A 911 caller, who would only identify herself as Carmen, told The New York Post: “I didn’t see anything, I just heard an explosion and I ran out like everyone did to look for the nearest exit. I had like a panic attack, I couldn’t breathe. My stomach started hurting,” the witness said. “I’m doing better — I’m just trying to catch a train to go back home to College Point.”

Designer Chelsea LaSalle tweeted: “holy f–k. just was stuck in a running stampede at port authority bus terminal due to bomb scare. cops EVERYWHERE.” She followed that with: “not a scare. actual explosion moments before i was about to get on the subway.” Commuter Keith Woodfin tweeted: “I was exiting the Port Authority and the National Guard was running towards something shouting ‘Go, Go, Go.’” One counter-terrorism investigator who was at the scene, said the suspect “could have killed a lot of people.” If his bomb had detonated the way it was supposed to, he’s absolutely right. There would have been a lot of casualties. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force also is investigating the incident.

The device was reported as ‘low tech’. This was very amateurish. “This is New York, the reality is that we are a target by many who would like to make a statement against democracy, against freedom,” Cuomo said. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said: “This was attempted terrorist attack,” adding that there was no additional threat at this time. Authorities are investigating transit system video that captured the incident. “Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals,” de Blasio said.

Today’s attack is the second ISIS-inspired one in New York City in less than two months. An Oct. 31 terror attack killed eight people and injured 11 others after a man drove a rented truck into people walking and cycling on a bike path in Lower Manhattan. Port Authority is the largest bus terminal in the U.S. and about 232,000 commuters go through the area daily. The number of passengers is expected to jump to 337,000 daily by 2040. It has now reopened.
