This will really make you feel good about the Terrorists for Traitors swap

The Obama administration, up to and including the President, have repeatedly assured us that the Taliban leadership released from Gitmo in a trade to return a nutcase who never should have been allowed to enlist in the Army and who deserted his post in wartime will never harm US interests.  At a White House reception where President Obama announced the deserter’s release – sharing the podium with the father of the deserter, where we learned that the apple hadn’t fallen far from the tree – said this:

The Qatari government has given us assurances that it will put in place measures to protect our national security.

He really did, and he did it with a straight face.  The only thing he left out was “Period.”  On her rounds of the Sunday Stupids after the President’s moment in the Sun basking in the glory of bringing home a deserter who had, in Rice’s words, “served honorably,” here’s what Rice had to say.

CNN learned that the detainees will be under a travel ban for one year, and Rice added that “there are restrictions on their movement and behavior” in Qatar, but said she was not at liberty to go into further detail.

“Suffice it to say that we are satisfied that it substantially mitigates the risk to the United States and to our national security, and we feel confident that the assurances given to us will be upheld,” she told CNN’s chief political correspondent Candy Crowley.

There’s lots of circumstantial evidence that the swap had less to do with bringing home a guy who should face a firing squad than it did with President Obama kowtowing to his base and actually keeping one of his campaign promises.  Closing Gitmo.  Rice wrapped her minute in the sun with this one.

“I think the terrorists are intent on doing what they’re going to do, but … we have a commitment to close Guantanamo Bay,” she said. “The existence of Guantanamo Bay is itself a detriment to our national security, which is why the President has prioritized closing it and why we intend to get that done.”

Every time we write about President Obama and his appointees, Susan Rice in particular, we feel like we got a contract with The Onion.

Now that we’ve worn out our Ruby Slippers, tripping down the Yellow Brick Road to meet the man behind the curtain, let’s venture back to Kansas, aka The Real World.

There’s some, as the major media would say, renewed violence in Iraq.  It seems that al Qaeda, remember them?, is on a rampage in Iraq.  They’ve actually taken some cities and are moving toward Baghdad.  Who could possibly be behind this?  Thanks for asking.

The FBI “most wanted” mugshot shows a tough, swarthy figure, his hair in a jailbird crew-cut. The $10 million price on his head, meanwhile, suggests that whoever released him from US custody four years ago may now be regretting it.

Taken during his years as a detainee at the US-run Camp Bucca in southern Iraq, this is one of the few known photographs of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the new leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and Syria, now known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS). But while he may lack the photogenic qualities of his hero, Osama bin Laden, he is fast becoming the new poster-boy for the global jihadist movement.

al Qaeda now owns three cities in Iraq including Fallujah, Ramadi, and Mosul.

The President, in his eagerness to leave Iraq and “end the war” refused to negotiate a Status of Forces agreement with the Iraqi government.  The SoF would have left a US force in Iraq, and it’s likely that those three cities, bought with the blood of US Marines and soldiers, would not be being terrorized by al Qaeda today.

Things are so bad that the President is being pushed to commit air strikes in Iraq.

This is what happens when a spineless leadership – and GW Bush gets some dirt on this one – is not committed to winning a war and is willing to, as the President said – to silence – at West Point, simply “ending” a war.  This mess is what Afghanistan will look like in short order.
