Seattle imposes $15 minimum wage. Meet the robot replacement that will be “hired.”

In Big Labor‘s push to unionize fast food workers the workers will soon find that there is a reason they are not paid more through free market forces. When the price of labor gets too high, industries innovate and spend more money automating jobs they would have previously hired humans to do. Seattle just bowed to political pressure from Big Unions and its city council has voted in a plan that will raise the minimum wage in the city to a whopping $15 per hour over the next few years. As that happens things like hamburger making will be automated. Meet your near future “burger flipper” here.

Seattle imposes $15 minimum wage.

From Motherboard:

[quote_box_center]Meet the robot replacement that will be “hired.”

Research is picking up for such automated replacements for fast food employees — doubtless spurred on by the current massive proposed increases in the minimum wage (and all the related costs tied to wage — social security, workers comp, unemployment compensation, etc.)

No human hand touched this hamburger. It was made entirely by robots.

One robot, rather—a 24 square foot gourmet-hamburger-flipping behemoth built by Momentum Machines. It looks like this:

The San Francisco-based robotics company debuted its burger-preparing machine last year. It can whip up hundreds of burgers an hour, take custom orders, and it uses top-shelf ingredients for its inputs. Now Momentum is proposing a chain of ‘smart restaurants’ that eschew human cooks altogether.

Food Beast points us to the Momentum’s official release, where the company blares:

Fast food doesn’t have to have a negative connotation anymore. With our technology, a restaurant can offer gourmet quality burgers at fast food prices. Our alpha machine replaces all of the hamburger line cooks in a restaurant. It does everything employees can do except better.”

And what might this robotic burger cook of the future do better than the slow, inefficient, wage-sucking line cooks of yore?

  • It slices toppings like tomatoes and pickles only immediately before it places the slice onto your burger, giving you the freshest burger possible.
  • …custom meat grinds for every single customer. Want a patty with 1/3 pork and 2/3 bison ground after you place your order? No problem.
  • It’s more consistent, more sanitary, and can produce ~360 hamburgers per hour.

Furthermore, the “labor savings allow a restaurant to spend approximately twice as much on high quality ingredients and the gourmet cooking techniques make the ingredients taste that much better.” Hear that? Without all those cumbersome human workers, your hamburger will be twice as good. For the same cost.[/quote_box_center]

This really comes as no surprise to me, most manufacturing has already been automated. I remember back in the 80’s a machine shop I worked in was trying to introduce robotics for simpler, more mundane tasks, and they were quite successful. Given the state of technology today, this trend will only grow.

Judging from the service I’ve been receiving at certain fast-food establishments, the help could spend less time whining about having a low-paying job and more time LEARNING HOW TO DO IT.

I am so thankful I stuck with it and earned the education and skill sets that I now have, as I posses the ability to if you hand me the drawings of this machine I am able to build it and maintain it. Don’t be a tool stay in school, and learn a useful skill.

The left does not get or understand this? Even after they comment about it they remain too stupid to get it. Remember our moron President recently commenting on many banking jobs being replaced by ATM’s? And yet he was too stupid to see this. Such is the case when the nation hires a President with no business experience no economics education in college who embraces Communism.

Still need people to install, refill, maintain and repair said robot. Fast food was never meant to be a career, just a temporary job until one moves on to something better.

the problem is that the unions did get the email neither did the socialist community leader of the $15 an hour move

        June 15, 2014 at 1:43 am

You need to rewrite what you said because it makes no sense.

Fact: Fast food workers are pricing themselves right out of the job market. Fact: Fast food is only a career if you become management and continue to advance. Not to stay a crew member 10-15 years down the line. Trying to place any blame on the government for something that they had nothing to do with it is futile. It’s a temp job so that person can go to college or a vocational school and learn a trade so they can earn a real living. The blame is squarely on the individual for not advancing themselves. Fast food has been getting more and more automated little by little as wages went up. This will only speed up the process.
