A Bully Law

Published

on

In this weekend’s NY Post and others:

“Though he’s had plenty of opportunities to compromise on his overreaching contraceptive mandate, President Obama has defiantly refused them all. Now he’s fighting a group of nuns in US Supreme Court.

The nuns are the Little Sisters of the Poor, and they run nursing homes for the elderly. The Little Sisters argue they should not be forced to offer coverage that violates their religious convictions.

The Obama argument is astounding. The gist is that the nuns really aren’t religious enough to qualify for the church exemption. The administration backs up that position with hefty fines for the Little Sisters if they don’t cave. For example, just for their home in Denver, where there are 67 employees, it could run to $6,700 a day. That’s money the Little Sisters simply don’t have.

Hours before she rang in the New Year here in Times Square, Justice Sonia Sotomayor — one of Obama’s own picks — issued a ruling enjoining the Obama administration from enforcing its mandate on the Little Sisters, and on Friday accepted papers from both sides explaining their positions.”

You know what? This is a bully law forced upon people to compromise their religious or moral beliefs for the sake of the state. Kind of sounds a little like Russian communism or German nazism, doesn’t it?

How dare any one dictate to another that they must comply with a law which violates individual freedom? How would those who are forcing the Church, its entities, the  followers of religious liberty, etc, like it if they were told that they would be fined for not going to church or another religious place of worship? I am sure they would be screaming that this type of law would be fascism at its worst.

This law violates the precepts of the Constitution on so many levels, and sadly, at least to this point, the Roberts Court has allowed our freedoms to be stripped away.

Perhaps now, finally, the Little Sisters will be bigger than the Obama administration, forcing the court to finally rule that this violation of our rights under the First Amendment is declared unconstitutional. Justice Sotomayor may be the swing vote to force the court to do the right thing for the Little Sisters and the rest of us, who understand exactly what the Constitution is – our very basic and elementary charter which defines us as FREE Americans, not pawns of the state.

Let’s hope so!

My one question to the above is: Even though it is a Catholic run organization, do they hire outside of there religion? If they hire someone that is not Catholic, then they have every right to have contraception offered to them. I understand this is a nursing home run by nun but are ALL the employees, doctors, nurses etc…all nuns?

I respectfully disagree. The applicant for a position has every right to ask what benefits are provided and the ability to NOT accept a job if they need to have their birth control paid for. BTW, I thought that we are trying to reduce the cost of insurance coverage? Having insurance pay for non essential things, like birth control, RAISES the cost of insurance.

The cost of having and raising a baby far exceeds the cost of contraceptives. Who will take physical and financial care of the unwanted babies because of this? Everyone who pays taxes in this country. You didn’t think that the religious organizations would, did you? Plus it will (hopefully) reduce the number of abortions and the possible mental/physical complications brought on with it. In addition, with the world population growing as it is, we will be even less able to provide a basic healthy standard of life for everyone, which we can’t do currently. And, if we can’t even make sure that everyone in our own country has access to low/no cost contraceptives, how can we expect the rest of the world to do it? Btw, most insurance companies will pay for drugs like Viagra and Cialis. Seems kind of odd to me, that we will help men get women pregnant but we won’t help women reduce the likelihood of getting pregnant. Of course, I’m just a non-religious white male.

“The cost” has nothing to do with the belief that contraception except for abstinence is wrong. If you do not believe that way and want to use contraception then either pay for it yourself of don’t work for Little Sisters of the Poor or any other Catholic organization.

You do know about paying for things yourself, don’t you? Contraception is not expensive.

if you were a woman you might not consider birth control “non-essential”

Yes, they hire outside their religion….what does that have to do with anything??? Are the people who apply for jobs with the Little Sisters of the Poor so stupid that they do not understand that this is a Catholic organization? When I took “the pill” I paid for it myself….I did not look to the government or insurance to pay for it!!

Purely and clearly, this is government overreach. Imagine fining people dedicated to serving the poor $6,700 a day. Outrageous.

You used the “clearly” and “government” in the same sentence…! This whole system was specifically (sinisterly) designed to destroy a major part of our country/economy and move everyone on to Medicaid (govrnmt controlled) as a consolation solution to their law that eliminated most everyone’s coverage in the first place. Mass manipulation by fraud and Executive Order. Welcome to your new dictator government. NAUGHT!!

Like I said, “government overreach”. Obama is not interested in personal religious beliefs he is after total control.

First off, it does have everything to do with it. No matter what job you apply for the even basic insurance covers birth control. Even though they are a Catholic based company, there insurance should cover it. Was all I was trying to ask. Good for you that you paid for yours, I don’t need it but many women do and as the one guy stated above, companies pay for men’s cialis etc so why not pay for the birth control as well? Seems the Catholic society want’s their people to not be responsible for having baby to me and having us pay for them after the fact. Sounds like good judgement to me…sarcastically stated!!

Catholics have disagreed with contraception for at least a thousand years. Why should that change now due to government law? They should not be forced to offer anything. I agree with the other commentators – if a prospective employee, applying for a position with a Catholic organization, doesn’t agree with their denial of birth control in some form then that person may buy their own or find another position elsewhere. Aren’t healthcare positions in dire need right now? That’s what they keep saying at least, or is that yet another lie?

Little Sisters of the Poor take vows of poverty when finishing their postulate training.

While Little Sisters can hire help outside of the Catholic faith, many are doctors and nurses and some even hold dual licenses. However, like any licensed hospital or nursing home in the US, qualified doctors and nurses may apply for employment and use their facilities.

Employees are not entitled to something that the Catholic institution does not offer. In this case, it is contraception. Employees can not dictate the terms of employment . If a prospective employee doesn’t like what is offered, they can apply for employment elsewhere. The tail does not wag the dog, Marissa.

So a business owner who is Jehovah’s Witness can opt out of blood tranfusions?

Right. The employee has the option of working there under that agreement or working somewhere else.

Insurance companies have been trying to put charities and religion based medicine out of business for years, just another way to get it done.
