Under the fedora: The Con, The Doctor and the Apple

Be it the smallest stadium in the country there is no place like home for the Red Sox (3-1 home record)

Meanwhile the Dodgers are tearing up the National League with a 9-1 record as of the start of the Day Tuesday.  Not bad for a franchise that was in absolute chaos not long ago.

This is the time of year when you have Baseball, Basketball and Hockey at the same time.

Not bad, not bad at all

Bob Owens is not impressed with the actions of the prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin case.

There is nothing in this affidavit nor among the publicly known facts about the case — nor even among the allegations from the victim’s family or their attorneys — that comes even remotely close to reaching the “depraved mind” standard. At most, the prosecutor would face making a difficult manslaughter case, and even then would risk having the lesser charge thrown out for insufficient evidence.

I am comfortable with saying that Corey’s multiple references to “Justice for Trayon” during her press conference combined with this breathtaking affidavit strongly suggest a political motivation.

However I was talking to a liberal friend who after being served a restraining order sent a text and was immediately arrested.  He had this to say

I sent a text message and served two days in Jail, he killed somebody and up until last week I served more jail time than he did.

I gotta admit it’s a pretty good line.

This next sentence contains a tiny spoiler for the Three Stooges Movie

I can’t believe there wasn’t a pie fight.  Are you legally allowed to have a Three Stooges feature length movie without a pie fight?

One of the most interesting posts I’ve read since we last talked written by an ex con talking about his time as a con man and the president:

One of my cellmates was an 85 year old that was finishing up his first conviction for a con, ten years. He started as a street con at 13 and worked his way up through the organization until he was arrested for the first time at 75. He taught me a lot about what the organized con is like and how they are trained and groomed. Mr. Obama is a poster child for the organized con.

It’s a great read and the perfect lead in to what happened on Morning Joe on Tuesday where there was a discussion about if the Buffett Rule and Romney’s wealth will be effective attacks against him.   Mark Haleprin talked about the White house using these attacks:  “…rather than making the election about the Obama record”

I think this highlights the most important factor in this election:

When your strategy is: “Look: Romney’s a Mormon”, “Look: Romney’s is rich!”, “Look: Romney’s stiff”, “Look Rush says something that Mitt hasn’t condemned.” instead of “Look: I’ve done a great job!” that’s a problem.

You can’t win on this message, and Obama won’t.

And they even attack Romney while denying they’re doing it as Stacy McCain pointed out:

In an article that dismisses concerns about anti-Mormon bias as “crying wolf,” MacGillis manages to squeeze in a jab at Romney’s “secrecy-minded religion”:

Ann Romney’s own parents were barred from attending the Mormon service for her wedding.

So, if you see an article that strikes you as gratuitously raising Romney’s religion as an issue, and complain about it, your complaint will then be used as an excuse to write more articles making gratuitous reference to Romney’s religion.

Heads liberals win, tails Romney loses.

At least Mitt is walking into this with eyes wide opened:

“Many in the media are inclined to do the president’s bidding and I know that’s an uphill battle we fight with the media generally,” Romney said, before praising O’Connor for offering a conservative voice.

The candidate said he was unfazed by the prospect of doing battle with the left’s vast operation.

“Democrats know that given the president’s record over the last three years they cannot run on that record,” Romney said. “They will make this race about anything but the president’s record and the economy.”

Romney has many weaknesses but an inability to recognize reality is not one of them.  He’s still going to beat Obama badly, maybe not Don Surber badly but it won’t be pretty.

And the president’s men taking the 5th before congress doesn’t help either.

Big Finish has started their new 4th Doctor series audios staring Tom Baker and Louise Jameson.  Baker had been refusing Big finish since 1999 so his change of heart was a big deal in geekdom.   I picked up episode 1 Destination Nerva this week and was positively glowing as I listened to it, although the end of my Lenten doctor who withdrawal might have something to do with it.

While I was listening to the CD extras and interviews I was dismayed by Louise Jameson (Leela) comments on the political leanings of this script but not even that could put a damper on it for me.

As Baker puts it in the trailers for the series “It’s Saturday Night tea time in 1977, all over again!” Well for me it’s a fall evening just after diner in 1981 and I’m keying up my the blank VHS tapes to record Doctor Who on  the New VCR that I just paid $500 for with my very first purchase with my very first credit card.

Sunday I was at the Worcester Tea Party’s Tax Day Rally.  About 300 people attended hearing a vast array of speakers.

The rallies aren’t as big as they once were, but that’s because most Tea Party types are now actively involved in real campaigns.

Anyone who thinks they will not make a difference this year is deluding themselves.

A pet peeve of mine even back when I used to blog for HiWired was my frustration of people believing  Mac were invulnerable to virus

“Windows gets hacked all the time not because it is more insecure than Apple, but because 95 percent of computer users are on Windows,” he said. “The other 5 percent have enjoyed a honeymoon that will eventually come to an end.”

Windows vista started the moves but the popular Ipads and phones etc  turned those moves into avalanches, and as Glenn Reynolds reports we have finally started to reach the point when all of these people who have pretended they can’t get a virus from a mac is getting a reality check.

The latest Mac security threat, a variant of the “LuckyCat” attack, takes advantage of an exploit in Microsoft Word documents, giving a remote attacker the ability to plunder infected systems, and steal data by hand.

Here is the killer line

It’s an exploit that’s been around for almost three years now, and is completely preventable if you keep your system up to snuff with security updates. The fact that it’s only now getting widespread publicity indicates how historically lackadaisical Mac users have been toward security — and that this attitude needs to change.

Apple has happily sold itself as beyond this kind of thing and the people who bought this BS are now finding themselves vulnerable to problems that people solved before I had my radio show.

I must confess,  a bit of Schadenfreude.

We had Kevin Williamson from National Review on my radio show this week.  He had a cover story on Elizabeth Warren that is really worth a read, and the show available here, it is really worth a listen.
