Reading Robert Stacy McCain’s “The Year ‘Global Warming’ Died” today inspired me to resurrect this column written October 11th, 2009 by the late David Hinz and myself – enjoy!

Cracks Appearing In The Wall Of Media Protection

The tactic used by the Algore Faction of the Lunatic Fringe Left, when discussing the issue of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW), or man caused climate change, has been to simply claim that “the debate is over.” Unable to realistically prove their climate models — models that systematically ignore such rudimentary climate elements as clouds, wind patterns and ocean currents; as well as outside influences such as solar flare activity — the left has simply ignored any evidence to the contrary.

By ignoring the overwhelming evidence or refusing to acknowledge it Gore and new BFF Google have teamed up to use Google Earth’s mapping tool to further push a propaganda agenda using models and data that have been proven wrong time and again.

Here’s a peak at Google Earth Climate introductory tour narrated by Al Gore:

Climate realists have been labeled as “Deniars,” equating them with those who ignore the gruesome documented written, photographic and physical evidence of the Holocaust. Unable to debate using science, the AGW kooks use pseudo-science and ridicule to deny discussion — trying to force their myopic vision of the world upon everyone else.

But, little by little, the pseudo-facts of AGW are being challenged. Scientists, angered by the perversion of their work have spoken out in defiance of international bodies intent upon forced climate agendas. And finally, some news organizations have begun to admit that there is still dissent from respected scientists going on.

Under the headline What Happened To Global Warming? the BBC is reporting what everyone already has observed — that although dread CO2 levels have continued to climb over the past decade — while AGW alarmists screamed about Armageddon — the world temperature has actually decreased during that period.

While the Algores of the world have gone from screaming about Global Warming to the new term Global Climate Change, [after all, the climate does change, thereby making their predictions accurate — if not coherent] some members of the media have begun to point out — quietly mind you — that “the emperor has no clothes.”

For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.

And our climate models did not forecast it, even though man-made carbon dioxide, the gas thought to be responsible for warming our planet, has continued to rise.

Dire predictions from the left — including the claim that global warming has gone so far as to be irreversible — have grown ever shriller, with wild predictions of ever greater doom, even as past predictions have proven themselves to be false. If the faulty climate model shows a “possible” rise in ocean levels of 1-to-4 inches, the climate alarmist screams about the inevitable damage done by a four to ten foot rise in ocean levels.

And for more than two decades the media have simply parroted the alarmist warnings as though they were gospel. But cracks are appearing in the wall of leftist propaganda.

The oceans, he says, have a cycle in which they warm and cool cyclically. The most important one is the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO).

For much of the 1980s and 1990s, it was in a positive cycle, that means warmer than average. And observations have revealed that global temperatures were warm too.

But in the last few years it has been losing its warmth and has recently started to cool down.

These cycles in the past have lasted for nearly 30 years.

As for the dangers to humanity brought about by increases in CO2, science — real science, not pseudo-science — indicates that historically there is zero correlation between CO2 levels in the atmosphere and world temperatures. Through more than four billion years of global climate change — and the climate does change continually — there have been periods when CO2 levels were more than 15 times today’s levels, and yet the earth was wrapped in ice.

At this scale, there is really no apparent correlation between carbon dioxide levels and global temperatures. What’s more, there have been ice ages when CO2 has been as much as 10 to 15 times higher than modern levels (for example the end-Ordovician Ice Age). There have also been times when temperature was increasing but CO2 was decreasing and times when CO2 was increasing but temperatures decreasing (during the Silurian and Devonian and during the Triassic and Jurassic, respectively).

With literally billions of earth years of actual climate evidence with which to study and model, IPCC politicians and their Global Warming agenda driven minions have chosen to fixate on the past thirty years — ignoring their own dire predictions of global cooling from the 1970’s — as proof that mankind is polluting the planet with CO2.

Their evidence is less than scant — non-existent is closer to the truth — while all evidence to the contrary is ignored.

As Earth’s climate history has shown, nothing predicted by the global warming alarmists would be unprecedented—Earth’s climate has been colder than today’s and much, much warmer. CO2 levels have also been many times higher than they currently are, even during ice ages. Ice ages come and go, caused by mechanisms mankind is powerless to control. And after every ice age the world warms and the glaciers disappear only to return millions of years later. No change in climate is irreversible. Given 4 billion years of Earth history and 542 million years of complex life, blaming mankind for 9,000 years of global warming seems rather silly.

As accepting as the world had seemed to be, just a year or two ago, over the planetary panic scenario outlined by Gore and other AGW cultists and repeated by our current president Barack Obama the world is now stepping back from that stance as evidence keeps mounting in favor of natural climate and solar cycles.

But it is not the debate in the Western countries that will be decisive . It is the rejection of the global warming cult in the rest of the world that has doomed the luddites and saved humanity from a future of hopeless poverty. As the G20 replaces the G8 as the forum for international economic cooperation, China, India, Brazil, South Africa and other countries who oppose mandatory emission controls that would curtail economic growth gain power.

Chinese president Hu Jintao told the UN Climate summit Sept. 22:

“Climate change is an environment issue, but also, and more importantly, a development issue…We should and can only advance efforts to address climate change in the course of development and meet the challenge through common development.”

This statement was downplayed in the Western press, but led stories in China. Placing economic growth ahead of saving the planet makes perfect sense if one does not believe the planet is in danger. President Hu did say that China would be looking at ways to improve efficiency, using more renewable and nuclear energy. Beijing will also reduce emissions per unit of output. But since Chinese output is expected to continue to grow at a rapid pace, total emissions will continue as to expand, as Chinese diplomats told the UNFCCC meeting in Bonn last June. As Hu said, “For developing countries, the top priority now is to grow the economy, eradicate poverty and improve livelihood.”

Yet, Climate cult leader Al Gore praised China’s efforts after Hu’s speech, noting that Beijing has planted more trees in the last two years than the rest of the world combined. But China has also expanded manufacturing faster than anyone else. Planting trees is much easier and less disruptive than the “cap and trade” policy Gore and Obama favor in the United States; a measure that would slow the economy, increase poverty and lower living standards.

Now that the world is starting to realize the reality of the situation and as the global warming hysteria begins to fad, a bit, a new enemy is emerging with the threat of imposing environmental laws and standards though international treaties, regardless of public support or opinion. This tactic is not new, the left have been using the courts in this country to push through bad law and bad policies for decades, and they have no problem getting their social justice counterparts throughout the globe to help push their cause. PointofLaw.com takes a look at what an International Environmental Court might look like:

At present, the debate over such a court is mostly being heard abroad – particularly in Great Britain, where a prominent lawyer named Stephen Hockman is spearheading a campaign that has won backing for the idea from various public figures such as Exchequer secretary Alistair Darling and Dame Judi Dench (Prime Minister Gordon Brown has also made vaguely favorable noises). At some point, however, we are likely to hear more about it on this side of the Atlantic. Already one international environmentalist group well known in this country, Friends of the Earth, has declared its backing for the concept, and others are likely to follow.

If it follows the lines promoted by Hockman’s campaign, an international environmental court would have the following characteristics:

  • It would be grounded on a new international treaty, most likely under the aegis of the UN, which would proclaim a universal human right to a healthy environment. Following the example of the International Court of Justice, the court’s rulings would be binding on all UN member states, and it would itself be part of the UN system.
  • It would have the power to impose fines and damages on nations or (significantly) private actors that degrade the natural environment, fail to protect endangered species, or otherwise fall short of respecting or enforcing the newly declared right to a healthy environment, as well as other requirements established by international environmental treaties. In its power to reach and assess fines and damages against private actors such as corporations, it would exercise markedly wider jurisdiction than the existing International Court of Justice, which can prescribe penalties against nations only.
  • The court would be open to complaints from individuals or non-governmental organizations (NGOs), again in contrast to the narrower jurisdiction of the ICJ, which accepts complaints only from state representatives.
  • It would be led by retired judges, climate change experts, and public figures, and would include a scientific body to assess technical issues. It is unclear whether this staff would be permanent or ongoing. Some have suggested that the panel might also wield an essentially regulatory power to issue guidance on environmental practices in advance of actual adjudication.
  • The tribunal would hear not only a variety of disputes of an intrinsically international character (as for example over air pollution crossing national boundaries, or damage to ocean fisheries) but also many purely domestic environmental disputes, because its jurisdiction would be premised on the enforcement of treaties and conventions with terms that control the domestic environmental policy of signatory states.
  • Like the ICJ, the court would have the power to pronounce advisory rulings that are not legally binding. Hockman in fact suggests that the new court’s main role would be in making “declaratory rulings” that embarrass countries into taking stronger environmental action.

There is nothing new in itself about pursuing environmental goals through international treaties. Compacts between particular nations, neighboring or otherwise, have addressed such problems as regional water and air pollution, migratory species, aquifer depletion and so forth. For the most part, however, such agreements have been reached among particular pairs or groupings of countries rather than under the aegis and sponsorship of the world in general.

Even if we are successful at stopping international treaties and domestic policy disasters like Cap-n-Trade the Global warming cultists will no doubt continue to blame anything and everything on Man-Made Global Warming like our friend Lee Doren outlines in his latest video: The Complete List of Things Caused By Global Warming

But the cracks in the media blackout of evidence to dispute the AGW alarmists are becoming more prevalent — even as the US Congress contemplates economic suicide in the name of Cap and Trade carbon credit trading. There is no scientific reason for their actions — only political.
