Though putting Romney on the ticket would be damn-near the only thing I can conceive as having even a remote chance of my pulling the lever for McPain, I just cannot see him doing it.

Then again, it's not like Maverick has many better options.

From today's Mitt E-mail blast...

Quote:
Dear (DocJ),

I can't thank you enough for all you did to support my campaign ... I am honored to give my full support to our party's presumptive nominee, John McCain. I sincerely hope you will do the same and here's why ... he is a man capable of leading our country in this dangerous hour.

I have no doubt that John McCain will do whatever it takes to win the war on terror and defeat radical, violent jihad. He will safeguard our conservative values by nominating judges who will interpret the Constitution -- not write new laws or legislate from the bench.

A staunch fiscal conservative, he will fight for fiscal discipline. He has vowed to veto every wasteful spending bill that crosses his desk and will fight to reduce the size and scope of the federal government. John McCain will work to lower corporate taxes, make the Bush tax cuts permanent and help families by doubling the tax exemption for dependents.

But he needs money to get that message out to the American people. ...

More or less standard fundraising stuff from there on out. Don't know about you, but that pretty much sounds like an audition speech to me.

I had someone ask me about it today at work.

I still believe it is a mistake to pick a VP before the Convention -- unless of course it is going to be some GONZO out of this world pick that will surprise everyone and suddenly bring Rockstar status to the McCain Campaign -- you know, picking Obama for instance

if it is Romney, would be that the VP could put his own funds into the campaign so that McCain can continue to burn cash at a high rate ahead of the public financing.

They need some serious cash to continue to build up their meager campaign staffs in some of the smaller states.

...and also adding Romney to the ticket right before the Dem convention would be a great way to narrow the polls and take some of the shine off of Obama's coronation as the second coming!

the theory that I like better (in terms of poll bounces) would be for them to announce the VP at the convention and allow for a VP/convention combined bounce. It may be enough of a bounce to change some psychology about the race leading into September.
