McGovern, former Clinton backer, endorses Obama
Former Sen. George McGovern, an early supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, urged her to drop out of the Democratic presidential race and endorsed her rival, Barack Obama.
After watching the returns from the North Carolina and Indiana primaries Tuesday night, McGovern said Wednesday it's virtually impossible for Clinton to win the nomination. The 1972 Democratic presidential nominee said he had a call in to former President Clinton to tell him of the decision, adding that he remains close friends with the Clintons.
"I will hold them in affection and admiration all of my days," he said of the Clintons.
Though not a superdelegate, former Sen. George McGovern is one of the most respected so-called heavy-hitters in the Democrat Party and his decision, coming last night as he watched the returns from North Carolina and Indiana, to switch his support from Hillary to Obama all but signals how most superdelegates are feeling to day. In fact on Drudge's front page he's got a developing story saying that Hillary is having trouble finding superdelegates who will take a meeting with her today.
With Hillary's extremely narrow win in Indiana and her double digit defeat in NC it looks like the only way for her to realistically win the Democrat nomination is to burn down the Party.
Ripping the Party apart by using her influence will appear to Obama supporters like she has stolen the nomination, a move that will render her Party broken and virtually impossible to reconcile.
I don't put that move past her as she feels entitled to the position and I for one would love to see that play out. Today in a conference call apparently Howard Wolfson and the team had insisted that Sen. Clinton was in the race until the convention... Great news for the GOP!
