Building a GOP Farm Team (A Homework Assignment)

Tagged:
Many of us here on the Minority Report are not pleased with the state of today's GOP. A lot of the issues that we conservatives hold dear to our hearts have been trampled on by the GOP: restraint on spending, limiting the nanny state, limiting government involvement in markets, etc., etc., etc.

The only way that we are going to be able to change the system is from the bottom up. We need a strong Conservative bench. In a two part series on The Next Right, Matt Moon takes a look at how we can create a strong farm team. [His emphasis is on the GOP, but I think we can agree that we are more concerned with a strong Conservative GOP.] Part 1 is here and Part 2 is here.

Major league/professional sports teams have "farm team" systems where they can identify and train prospects. The best franchises in baseball have fully developed minor league system: Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, etc. The NBA only recently saw the usefulness of having a minor league system with the NBDL. Here's an observational question (and I look forward to responses/disagreements/debate on this): Do the Democrats today have a better "farm team" system than the Republicans? My answer would be yes, because not only have liberal/left-leaning organizations and the DNC have been involved in identifying and training politicians and aspiring politicians at the local and state level; they have supported these candidates using Web2.0 tools like ActBlue.

There have been a few advancements on this over the last few months. Slatecard has become the answer to ActBlue. The Next Right has launched with the intention of building grass roots activism (and several other blogs like RedState have started to get far more involved at the local level than they had been prior).

The sad truth of the matter is that we must do more. That is why I am challenging the readers, commentators and front page contributors to help us spread the message of true conservatives in races across the country. This year we have:

The big problem that we have here at the Minority Report is that it is impossible for all of us to follow every one of these elections. This is where we are going to need a lot of help. Here's the homework: Pick out your local races from the list above (I would definitely like to at least see Gov, Sen and House from anyone that has a race this year) and start reporting on who the candidates are, what their positions are and the best way that we can donate to them (not all are on Slatecard sadly).

If we can get enough of this grass roots activism to get money to the qualified conservatives then I believe that we can build the farm team that we need so that we never have to be dissatisfied with our nominees again. So, why are you just sitting there? Get to work!

Me? I've got quite a few races I'm interested in starting with MO-Gov. I'll have some stuff up on this in the next couple off days.

This is very crucial and after reading a similar post I was hoping someone here would write about it here. You rocked it!

The party hardly, if ever puts up a candidate against him because he'll spend $40,000,000 even if there is no Republican running against him. When Republicans do run someone in this district, they do nothing to let anyone know there is someone running. Every once in a while you'll find out some Republican has decided to challenge him when you go to fill out your ballot, and that will be the first you'll hear about it.

I think there is someone this year but haven't been able to find out who it is. You've inspired me to contact Bexar County Republicans and see what I can find out.

There is one other issue that must be addressed where it involves building a Farm Team...I've addressed it before and been accused of whining...so let me start by explaining that a problem must be identified before it can be corrected...and Conservatives will never throw off the yoke of our Moderate Masters until this one is addressed. I've spent a lot of time while working on the local and state level observing and thinking about how Moderates maintain such a lock on this party when 60 to 70 percent of it is Conservative. I've watched the machinations of those in leadership. I've watched who gets picked to work on committees, I've watched to see who gets selected to permanent offices in the local party and I can tell you the Cork in the bottle that allows squishes to hold back the conservative majority is called networking. I can see it operating, and I have to admit I don't know how to fix it...but I'm sure there is someone out there who knows how to fix it...

It goes something like this:

Bill Partyboss it president of the Little County Republican Party. Bill is there because Bob Partyman nurtured him and ferried his political activity every step of the way. Bob Partyman was likewise groomed by Bill Squishpromoter who was guided by someone else before him. and so it goes with every party office at every level of the Republican Party. No one but squish approved party men get promoted to any level of prominence. Conservatives don't move up without enormous effort and as soon as they get there...there is a higher ranking squish who immediately begins working to undermine and destroy him, and so it goes...(see my earlier posts on the RMSP...I'll be following up with more on them soon). Every rung a true conservative climbs places him in an ever more perilous position. Sure, Conservatives make headway from time to time...as in 1980, 1994, and 2004, but as soon as they do...squish Party Bosses set to work undermining them and trying to shove them out of leadership. I've seen it happen...A conservative stands up at a convention to make a point of order, or make a statement, or to promote a platform change or whatever...and they're shouted down...the Convention Chairman begins working to play Parliamentary tricks to shut them down and keep their issues from being recognized. Every time conservative candidates are brought forward to run in districts where no Republican has run before, the squish leadership puts up a squish candidate up to run against them as soon as they show any signs of being able to defeat the Democrat...and so it goes.

As a result...the Conservative surge that brought about such electoral successes as 1980, 1994. and 2004 which energized the Conservative base to become involved in the convention process and who are fired up to affect real change wear themselves out crashing against the moderate breakers...the momentum dies...the Conservatives go home...and the squish leadership goes back to business as usual.

The only thing I can think of to break this is for Conservatives to stand up and fight locally....don't stop.. don't let the good ole boy squish network wear down your enthusiasm and continue to fight on till the good ole boy network is smashed to oblivion. the problem is...human nature being what it is...when it get's too hard...people get tired of fighting and just give up...There will be die hards who will stay and fight on to the bitter end....but unless everyone stays and fights...they will inevitably lose to the squish organization and the squish party machinery!

Beyond that I don't know how you lead an insurgency from inside the Party that won't die out...Gingrich did it...and we could learn from him how to go about it...but I wouldn't want his hands on anything we do going forward because he's become corrupted by 14 years in Washington...

Any suggestions?

The more that we are able to get a Conservative A team, the more that we can promote to AA. Then to AAA. And then to the bigs. We could do this even with the squishies in charge of the party, because they will have a harder time getting qualified squishies if Conservatives occupy the lower parts of the farm system.

And if your district is competitive, how about a little research on some other TX races?

We had Joe Squishyman as our representative in a fairly safe Republican district. Two years ago, a true conservative came along to challenge for his seat. The MI Republican Party backed the incumbent and warned us over and over that if we turned Squishyman out in the primary, we would end up with John Liberal Democrat in November.

Well, OUR candidate DID turn out Squishyman in the primary -- and then, in a Democrat year, he won in the general election. Now, we have a Conservative Republican incumbent -- and he is doing one helluva job in Washington.

What I find despicable is situations like John Warner running a third party candidate to stop Ollie North from being elected in VA...It happens all the time and you never hear about it...I wonder what the RMSP crowd would do if we ran the third party Conservative to stop a RINO from being elected?
