FT.com is reporting that Sen Joseph Lieberman, the Democratic candidate for Vice President in 2000 with Al Gore is being vetted by Sen John McCain to run on the 2008 Republican ticket.

Because of the close friendship between the two senators, Lieberman has often been mentioned as a possible VP choice.
DaveG has front paged this at Race42008 with the additional update from The Politico that is reporting that Sen McCain may announce at the Republican Convention that he will only serve one term -- allowing him to govern in an "Apolitical" manner.
If McCain goes with Joe, he’ll be operating under the assumption that the MSM will make such a big deal about the country’s first bipartisan ticket of the modern era that public opinion will shift a few points towards McCain as a consequence.
As for the Politico article, when Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday attempted to pin down McCain campaign manager Rick Davis as to the rumor of a one-term pledge, Davis did an Apostle Peter impersonation, denying the report three times.
"If you know John McCain, you know there's not going to be much politics in the White House," Davis replied, ignoring the matter of whether the Arizona senator, who turns 72 later this month, could limit himself to a single term.
Asked directly about the matter, Davis replied: "Chris, you're going to have to come to the Republican convention."
When Wallace noted that Davis wasn't ruling it out, the aide again declined to discuss the prospect. "I'm not talking about it all," Davis said.
As noted in the FT.com piece, a Sen Lieberman VP on the Republican ticket would alienate a large number of Conservative voters -- but might well cement the votes of moderate Democratic and Independent voters.
This is all speculation at this time -- certainty will have to wait for the convention in Minneapolis.

Let's see - a moderate Scoop Jackson Democrat paired with a far-left Liberal pro-victory Democrat (let's face it folks, aside from the war Lieberman is about as left of center as they come). Sounds like a winning ticket to me - if you're a Democrat, that is.
You know, and I say this as someone who has not had a sip of non-sacremental booze in over 2-years, I could probably consume all the scotch in the cellars of Teddy Kennedy's beach-estate and still not be drunk enough to vote for a McCain-Lieberman ticket.
