WASHINGTON, DC – Tomorrow, Congressman John E. Peterson (R-PA) will take square aim at 27 years of failed energy policy by amending the Interior Appropriations bill to allow for responsible deep-sea oil and gas production. A two-sentence rider first included in the FY82 Interior bill has prevented American consumers from accessing American energy resources for almost three decades.

In a recent report published by the Department of the Interior, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) estimates that there are 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas located along our nation’s outer continental shelf – but currently locked up by the government according to congressional fiat.

Peterson, who successfully amended the bill in committee in 2006, will propose that the subcommittee lift the prohibition on exploration from 50-200 miles offshore, leaving the first 50 miles under moratorium. The Peterson Amendment will modify sections 104 and 105 of the Interior Department budget appendix (attached) so that oil and natural gas preleasing and leasing activities can begin.
