Should we raise taxes on the rich, again?

Tagged:

This morning on a local talk station, a black business owner called in and said that he is extremely concerned about Obama’s plan for tax increases on the rich. He said, “I’ve worked hard all these years and finally own my own business and am proud to be making over $250,000. I don’t think it’s fair that I fork over a big portion of my income to Obama and the Democrats to pay for health care for everyone.”

Obama’s plan will also raise capital gains taxes. This will affect all of the baby boomers who will be retiring and may want to sell their homes or other assets. Plus, they will begin withdrawing money from their 401(k’s,) and under Obama will pay higher tax rates, because they are also considered rich by the Socialist Democrats. These baby boomers have worked hard all their lives. Why should they have to pay more taxes because they were smart enough to invest, realizing that social security won’t be enough for them to live on, or might even go broke?

The Democrat’s answer to everything is tax increases on the rich. But they don’t stop there. They want to roll back the Bush tax cuts, which will result in one of the biggest tax increases in our history. Everyone who pays taxes will be affected, not only the “so called” rich. Our economy recovered from a recession and from the attacks of 9/11 to a large extent due to Bush’s tax cuts.

The country seems to be ready for “change” under Obama and the Democrats. The real change will be our "change" going into their pockets. I wish that everyone could have heard the call from the small business owner this morning. He is not rich. He is the kind of American who works long hours and provides jobs for other Americans. People like him are the people that Hillary, Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Obama, the "real rich," consider rich. They want more of his money so that they can implement more government programs to create their dream of the perfect Nanny State. They will only succeed if we let them.

Exactly right. It is distressing that the dems love to punish achievement and independence. They want dumbed down dependents, so that their power wil grow.

the elite left who are now in the majority ,will be living the high life at our expense...

Lowering taxes has worked every time it has been tried. I can't believe that the country will chose to become like Europe, where some pay 80% in taxes and their health care system stinks from what I hear.

people would vote themselves higher taxes!

We will see if the propagandists on the left have won over the majority of Americans, come November.

I'm betting they haven't...yet...

Remember that nearly half of Americans have no effective federal income tax liability. And of that group, a substantial number make so little that the qualify for the Orwellian-named "Earned Income Tax Credit". Every single one of these people have been completely divorced from the "liability" side of the tax equation ledger - they don't pay them now and they will never pay them no matter how much they go up - so, in sum, they couldn't care less where are tax rates.

This is a huge percentage of the Democrats' base of voters. Obviously.

Then, there's the super-rich. These folks are left-wingers because, honestly, they can afford to be. They make enough money that they can avail themselves of tax shelters for some of their earnings, much of which earns income tax free, and with what is left they can write a check to the IRS out of their checking account with little worry.

Ask yourself, what are taxes to someone who makes, say, $5M a year? Answer: something your accountant pays for you. And you don't think an instant beyond that. Plus, this allows them to wallow in their self-proclaimed moral superiority - look at how generous they are! So much more so than those icky, God-and-gun clutching right-wing rabble who make noisy arguments about taxes.

Those in the middle (risk-takers and entrepreneures who pay taxes but aren't earning enough to be able to access some of those tax avoidances avenues)? Well, that's the Republicans' base.

Keep in mind also shelia that 90% of our friends, neighbors and fellow voters think about taxes only about 2x a year - on April 15th and whenever they get a raise in salary (and they see how little of that raise they actually get to keep). And so, they get the media mantra that never mentions out of control spending growth - other than to point out how callous are Republicans for wanting to take food out of the mouths of babies and somesuch - meanwhile screaming to the high heavens about DEFICITS! DEFICITS! DEFICITS! and, giving little more thought than that, convince themselves, well it's for the children...

Very good analysis of the situation...allthough, is there really that high a percentage of Americans not paying taxes? I hope you are wrong on that. It seems to me more people are engaged and aware of things...or at least there are enough of us rocking the politicians boats on some issues (immigration, energy etc) to make sure they listen.

I'm a little more optimistic than you sound...:)

making sure Obama doesn't make it to the White House...it will always be a battle holding back liberalism, and encouraging people to embrace the conservative ideals of less govt and more personal responsibility. But if we wind up with the WH and majority in the House and Senate in full blown Marxist mode, it's over.

Unfortunately, yes there is.

Amazing! The Democrat's base is growing. We are a 50-50 country now, but not for long, I'm afraid.

change the balance in our favor!

That does not bode well for the country...we must defeat the marxists in November, including Obama.
