There has been lots of cheering, Hindenburg’s and houses falling out of the sky after Hillary lost to B. Hussein Obama in Iowa. Some pundits sagaciously expressed their reservations. Nonetheless, under the category of “be careful what you wish for” we now have this update. What does it all mean for Republicans? I am not exactly sure, but perhaps Romney should show he can do something other than continually take the flame thrower out on Republican’s.
The next POTUS will need to show a very skeptical American populace he can not only lead, but has a vision on how to accomplish change. As a nation, we have grown weary of war. This is a symptom complementary of a reality which has been proven time and again throughout history. Before World War II American’s were overwhelmingly in favor of avoiding participation in a “European War”. Towards the end of that conflict, while our desire to win was not in question, there is no uncertainty the nation had grown tired of war’s devastating impact. Numbed by hideous circumstances which always accompany such devastation and tired of the inhuman abnormality, some polls indicated an 85% approval of the Atomic Bombing of Japan, even after the effects were known. As a nation, it was apparent we just wanted it to end, not really an unnatural desire
.So once again we move forth into a new era which will be devoid of some past personalities, including our President. This would not be unlike many other similar periods in history but for one important factor. The Democrats have invested considerable time and effort characterizing this as “Bush’s War” and “His conflict”. Collectively, they have abandoned all common sense in the effort to impugn and destroy a personality and by association the Party. They have let no lie, mischaracterization of their own reasoning, fallacious assertion or ignominious action stand in their way. Democrats have once again dusted off the sanctimonious Vietnam Era playbook which was a sacred writ of their salad days. They have used it as a cudgel against one more generation to presage defeat and hoist a specter of devious, parochial adventurism as a casus belli. Nothing could be more fallacious or illusory. Yet one reality is clear; that a public either abused by the continuous mendacity or tired of the vexatious impact of war want change.
In order to achieve change, one does not necessarily need to abandon all the vestiges of past policies. This is certainly true in our current era and in particular the war against terrorism. We have and continue to make historic gains against the forces which have for years sought to destroy our society and indiscriminately kill the innocent. To abandon such a policy at this point is not only counter intuitive, but would also allow the forces or terror to once again openly rally against us. Whether you agree with the war or not, our President has clearly, consistent with his oath, kept us safe and delivered the conditions for further movement towards lasting calm. This has not been achieved cheaply or without great personal sacrifice in reputation and, one can only guess, also significant emotional contribution which will forever be without catharsis. This President had a vision, made promises and achieved much. He led when others demurred or simply could not lead in the face of a confusing and uncertain future. Concur or not with the decisions, that’s what leaders do and accomplish under the most trying of circumstances. This last eight years is certainly no exception.
Overall, we now face a public who has been subjected to all the aforementioned circumstances and conditions. Add to this situation a Congress that has achieved relatively little that is important to our population. The environment is at best vexatious and at worst, angry. That could mean change, just for the sake of change, or a concerted effort using the underpinnings of our democracy to ensure no man (or woman) not prepare to lead or articulate a deliberate future vision is left standing. Should that be the case, let’s hope both current rumor, innuendo and electoral strategy do not prevail. For, given current circumstances, that will unquestionably lead to destructive and unfavorable results for our Party.
