Iraqi Kurds to Al Qaeda; No Vacancy

Meanwhile, Back at The War

Lost in the continued efforts of Democrats to surrender in Iraq and defund our troops are some positive signs coming from the Iraqi populace. Following the example of other indigenous groups such as the “Diyala Awakening” the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has declared there is “no room” for Al Qaeda in Kurdistan. PUK is of course the party of Iraq’s President Jalal Talabani and therefore carries significant political weight. A sign of things to come? Judge for yourself.

The dithering of Democrats on funding our troops and talk of having already lost this war seem to be drowning out hopeful signs of progress. While these changes are nascent and very fragile they are significant for several reasons. First, they represent the first time some of these groups have shown a willingness to oppose AQ and like minded groups. Next, they now span several regions of Iraq in a more concerted effort, leaving less places as a safe haven. Tempering these signs is that in tribal societies, agreements by their very nature are sometimes fleeting. Nonetheless, that various tribes and groups now appear to see the value in not sheltering or supporting AQ and its various splinter organizations is a hopeful sign.

The impact of this development is also important in relation to the recent “surge” strategy. Given the diminished ability of terrorists to operate in Baghdad proper, they have attempted to move into outlying areas. However, that movement was anticipated by the military and has been met with action when necessary.

Overall, there is still a lot of progress to be made. However, to say that progress is not being made towards the goals outlined by this administration and General Petraeus would be mendacious.
