With gas topping $4 per gallon, people are wondering what can be done to bring the prices down. And of course, in step our CongressCritters with a brilliant idea - let's tax the "windfall" profits of Big OilTM!
With gasoline prices topping $4 a gallon, Senate Democrats want the government to grab some of the billions of dollars in profits being taken in by the major oil companies.
Well, that's certainly a new idea!
Oh, you mean it's not?
Silly me - I've long argued that the Democrat Party has not had an original idea since at least 1965 - and perhaps not since 1933. It just never ceases to amaze that they continue to provide evidence for that thesis - almost daily.
Oh, and you'll note that it's the govenrment that will get this money - so in reality, this has precisely nothing to do with lowering the price of gasoline. It's only that the government mafia is pissed because they're not getting their cut of the action.
"The oil companies need to know that there is a limit on how much profit they can take in this economy," said Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat...
Erm this economy, Richard? Do you mean to say there is some other economy where Democrats will let companies decide what they can charge to deliver products and at what profit? Nah - I didn't think so, either. Certainly that will be a "revise and extend" moment for the famed Nazi-hunter.
The Senate proposal would impose a 25 percent tax on profits over what would be determined "reasonable" and would allow oil companies to avoid paying the tax if they invest the money in alternative energy projects or refinery expansion.
Uh, Senate Democrats? There's a reason oil companies don't invest heavily in "alternative energy projects" now. Do you know what it is? Eh?
It's because they are FREAKING OIL COMPANIES, MORONS!! They produce OIL-based products. That is what makes them OIL COMPANIES.
Gad - it's simply amazing how many stupid people manage to get themselves elected to public office.
Oh and of course, Senate Democrats believe themselves, and believe they should be seen by all (right, Tlaloc?) , to be the final arbiters of all that is "resonable" in the market, right?
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

How Congress will create a disaster -- ie - a dependence on foreign oil by denying domestic production, leading to huge increases in prices due to worldwide demand and decreased production -- then will attack and punish others who are trying to rectify their mess.
